new life church

A gunman opened fire in the parking lot of a Colorado Springs church on Sunday, striking four people, the church’s pastor said.
A black-clad man armed with a rifle opened fire on worshippers inside a Colorado Springs, Colorado, megachurch Sunday afternoon, wounding several people, church and hospital officials reported.
The gunman was then shot to death, a minister said.
Rob Brendle, an associate pastor at New Life Church, said the attack took place after a late-morning service.
Amy Sufak, a spokeswoman for Penrose-St. Francis Hospital in Colorado Springs, told CNN that several victims were taken to the hospital.
Colorado Springs Police Chief Rick Myers would confirm no details of the incident, calling it a “very dynamic situation right now.”
Lt. Lari Sevene, a spokeswoman for the El Paso County Sheriff’s Department, said the attack took place shortly after 1 p.m. and said possibly two or three people were wounded. She could not confirm the death of the gunman and referred further questions to the Colorado Springs Police Department.
But Brendle told CNN the gunman was dead.
New Life Church was founded by Rev. Ted Haggard in 1984.
Update: Other reports suggest that a suspect has been detained. Another report says that one gunman was shot, and a second possible gunman and a car full of explosives was being sought. No confirmation yet from Colorado Springs police or the El Paso Sheriff’s office on any of these reports. Obviously things are rather chaotic right now.
Update: Fox31 in Denver reports that “Police have confirmed that the shooter was killed, though they are not saying whether he was shot by police or died of a self-inflicted gunshot.” No one else is picking up this report yet, so it’s unclear whether it’s been confirmed.

Giant offshore wind farms to supply half of UK power

Britain is to launch a huge expansion of offshore wind-power with plans for thousands of turbines in the North Sea, Irish Sea and around the coast of Scotland. John Hutton, the energy secretary, will this week announce plans to build enough turbines to generate nearly half Britain’s current electricity consumption. He will open the whole of Britain’s continental shelf to development, apart from areas vital for shipping and fishing. The scheme could see turbines so large that they would reach 850ft into the sky, nearly 100ft taller than Canary Wharf. Each would be capable of powering up to 8,000 homes. Britain’s current range of coal, gas, nuclear and other power stations are capable of generating 75 gigawatts (GW) of electricity, but less than 0.5GW comes from wind. Planning consents have been granted for a further 3GW and the government had already made clear it wanted this raised to 8GW. Hutton will announce at an energy conference in Berlin tomorrow that he wants to see this target raised to 33GW-worth of wind turbines installed in the seas around Britain by 2020. If energy consumption remains stable this would mean wind power could supply the electricity needs of every home in Britain. There would still be a need to keep fossil-fuelled power stations in reserve because windless days could leave Britain with power shortages. However, studies at Hutton’s department for business, enterprise and regulatory reform have shown that the extra cost of maintaining standby power stations would add little to bills. Hutton said: “The UK is now the number one location for investment in offshore wind in the world and next year we will overtake Denmark as the country with the most offshore wind capacity. “This could be a major contribution towards meeting the EU’s target of 20% of energy from renewable sources by 2020.” Hutton made clear the scale of the plans. The “first round” of offshore wind farms, in 2001, comprised a few small demonstration projects. The “second round” in 2003 limited development to the Thames estuary, the Greater Wash and the northwest. Under the new proposals, the whole of Britain’s continental shelf would be opened to development, potentially including the English Channel and much of the coast of northern Scotland, where winds are most reliable. It could mean that wind farms would become visible from almost every point of Britain’s coast. Some developers have made clear that they would like to see a forest of turbines stretching up the North Sea, whose shallow waters make it relatively cheap and easy to develop. Hutton’s plan would be subject to an environmental assessment but it is certain to amplify the conflicts over wind farms. So far there have been few objections to Britain’s six offshore wind farms because they are largely out of sight. However, the scale of the proposed offshore developments is certain to bring controversy as they will often be visible from land. Maria McCaffery, chief executive of the British Wind Energy Association, welcomed the move. “This expansion will mean that by 2015 the UK’s offshore market will be twice the size of any other national offshore wind market.”

Honolulu Marathon 2007 Has The Winners

Honolulu Marathon 2007 just now announced the winners. They are Ambesse Tolosa from Ethiopia and Alevtina Biktimirova from Russia.
The Results of Honolulu Marathon Winners:

* Men: Ambesse Tolosa [Ethiopia] 02:17:26
* Women: Alevtina Biktimirova [Russia] 02:33:06

This marathon in the beautiful state of Hawaii turned to be a very popular one as 27,829 runners registered for Honolulu Marathon 2007.
It was the 35th annual Honolulu Marathon in 2007 which turned to be a big success and a gathering place for the University of Hawaii football stars.
University of Hawaii football fans began lining up outside the Hawaii Convention Center exhibition hall shortly after 8 a.m., and when the doors opened an hour later they headed straight for the autograph area.
Several dozen people were in line when UH receivers Ryan Grice-Mullins and Jason Rivers appeared amidst a round of applause. The two signed autographs and posed for pictures for several hundred fans during a 90-minute session at the Honolulu Marathon Expo on Saturday. They signed their names on footballs, t-shirts, photos, caps, and UH banners.
Amy Krukowski of Honolulu, who described herself as a big UH football fan, was one of the early arrivals. She obtained autographs for herself and a family member.
Cory Haitsuka and Momi Tamashiro of Honolulu, who said they also are big UH football fans, waited an hour for autographs. They had the two players sign copies of a recent coffee-table book about UH football, saying one of the books would be a Christmas present.
Keaulana Kapulei of Honolulu waited in line for 40 minutes with his wife and two small children. Asked if the wait was worth it, his wife said, "Oh yeah!'' Kapulei said he has been following UH football for some time and appreciated meeting the two players since the Sugar Bowl-bound team had a good season.
Pegi Braun of Honolulu was wearing a green t-shirt bearing number 15 on the back and "Colt Brennan for Heisman'' on the front. "We love him. Go Colt,'' she said a few hours before the ceremony in New York where the popular quarterback was a finalist for the Heisman Trophy. -

Charity Forced to Pay Copyright Fee So Kids Can Sing Carols

Christmas is known world-wide as a time for sharing, a time for giving. But for one charity, instead of Santa arriving with gifts, the copyright police turned up demanding money. Why? Because the charity allows children to sing carols on the premises and their kitchen radio is a little loud. You couldn’t make it up.Be under no illusion, being unlicensed to play music to the public is a very serious situation in the UK. The Copyright, Designs and Patents Act 1988 states that if you use copyright music in public, you have to get permission from every single copyright holder to play their music. Or pay a fee to the right outfit.Car maintenance chain Kwik Fit is currently tied up in a bitter legal battle with the UK Performing Rights Society (PRS). It’s alleged that Kwik Fit’s mechanics allowed their radios to be played within earshot of the public - a truly heinous crime for which the PRS are demanding £200,000 in damages. According to a report, the PRS are at it again. The staff at a charity also received a visit from a PRS officer who declared that because a staff radio in the kitchen could be overheard by the public in their tea-room, they would need a license. The charity, Dam House, which was originally set up to save a historic building and offer community and health facilities, had to have a fund-raising event to raise the money for the license. However, having purchased a license, this wasn’t the end of the matter. The PRS then started asking more questions, and when they discovered that kids sing in a carol concert there at Christmas, they declared that the premises were under licensed. Yes, of course - the PRS wanted yet more money.“We got really worked up when they told us how much we would have to pay this year” said charity trustee, Margaret Hatton. “They asked us what facilities we had and we think they are charging more because they found out we’ve got a function room.”The next quote from Margaret really speaks for itself - has the world gone mad?“They told us the only way to avoid paying to sing the carols is if the kids are told to stick to old songs which are out of copyright.”Next thing you know someone will be saying ‘Happy Birthday‘ is copyrighted and you can’t sing that to the public in the tea-rooms. Well, unfortunately it is, and legally you can’t.Elaine Hurst, another Dam House trustee explained: “We know the recording artists need to be paid for their work but this is ridiculous.”Every TV owning family in the UK has to have a UK TV License by law, the proceeds of which go to fund BBC TV and BBC radio stations nationwide. To charge a charity money because the public can overhear a radio is crazy, especially when you consider the public already paid another license to be allowed to listen to the content coming out of its speakers.

"Dead" man hid in family home for three years

LONDON (Reuters) - A man who had been declared dead after a canoeing accident but in fact survived hid in his home for three years before his arrest this week, his wife told British newspapers Saturday. Anne Darwin described how her husband, John, had avoided discovery by using a small passage to an apartment in an adjoining house owned by the couple.John Darwin was arrested on suspicion of fraud after he sensationally reappeared and walked into a police station claiming amnesia."For three years, while virtually everyone close to us believed John was missing presumed dead, he was actually at home with me," Anne Darwin, who recently left Britain for central America, told the Daily Mirror."We were living as man and wife, although it was far from a conventional life," she added."There were a few hairy moments and I lived in fear of being found out," she told the Daily Mail in another interview. She said Darwin had talked to her before his disappearance about faking his death as a way to solve financial problems.Friday, magistrates granted Cleveland Police an extra 36 hours to question Darwin, 57, on suspicion of fraud. Officers plan to question his 55-year-old wife if she returns to Britain.Newspaper reports said his life insurance and work benefits had been paid to his wife.Anne Darwin spoke to the Daily Mail in Miami where she had traveled from Panama, apparently heading to Britain after telling reporters she had been "living a lie" and fears her children would never forgive her.She told the Daily Mirror her husband partly lived with her in the family home but, if visitors called, had to flee through the passage hidden by a wardrobe with a false back. It led to one of several apartments the other house was divided into."VERY ANGRY"Former prison officer Darwin vanished in March 2002 from his home in Hartlepool, but according to his wife, he turned up at their house a year later."I didn't even recognize him at first," she told the Mirror. "He was an absolute mess, all disheveled. I was relieved he was alive, of course, but I was also very angry with him."She added: "We had a lot of debt, in the tens of thousands. He said there was only one way out of the situation and that was to fake his death. I said it was the wrong thing to do and could not go along with it but he badgered away."She said the couple decided to move to Panama but Darwin, who was missing their sons Anthony and Mark, invented a plan to "return from the dead.""I didn't think he would get away with it, but he had enough of being dead. John desperately wanted contact with the boys."In 2002, Anne Darwin reported her husband missing, saying she feared he had suffered an accident while kayaking in the North Sea near their home in Hartlepool, in Cleveland. A few weeks later the shattered remains of his red kayak were discovered. In 2003, following a police inquiry, a coroner declared him dead. Thanks to YahooNews for the story

Only One State Needed For Impeachment!

think Bush and Cheney should be impeached. Presidential candidate Dennis Kucinich has a new strategy for this to happen. If just one state House and Senate pass together a Resolution for Impeachment, the U.S. Congress will be forced to set aside all other business and deal with impeachment. This is according to the Thomas Jefferson Manual on Impeachment. I think Vermont is the best place for this to happen, but Vermonters need to speak out.(Thanks to Source) Isaiah Back @ Randolph Center
